![]() The unlocks are pretty cheap and it seems like the game is balanced to let you make progress without having fully upgraded characters. ![]() Now that I've played a while though, I think it's OK. This annoyed me at first - it felt "impure" for a roguelike, and it seemed like you'd need to grind a bunch before you could start playing the "real game", with all options available. ![]() A lot of the game's content is gated behind unlocks initially, which you can buy with in-game currency that you earn from completing runs.(Good/bad relationships cause your units to buff/debuff each other any time they use a randomly-selected skill, which can be either great or run-killing if it's a skill you need to use a lot). In it's current state, you sorta need to invest as much as you can into giving your units positive relationships, because it's like impossible to win otherwise. The biggest source of RNG grief/elation is the relationship system, which I think has a bit too much impact on the fate of a run.It seems like most of the potentially run-killing RNG systems are mitigable (and you're supposed to mitigate them, or suffer the consequences). There's a lot of RNG, but it swings both ways and generally I think it's well tuned.I wish it just told you what everything does. The biggest offender are negative Quirks, about 50% of which are just flavor text with no mention of specific mechanics. And the wiki isn't super fleshed out yet, so sometimes you just gotta roll with it and see what happens. Most mechanics are pretty intuitive and/or well-explained, but sometimes you're only given a keyword or symbol with no explanation and that doesn't feel so good.It feels like you're having to improvise and make the most of what you've got constantly which is really fun (when it works out). I love the battles, the enemies, the player-controlled units, the art, and the different synergies and interactions that emerge during a run. Some random thoughts in no particular order: I couldn't get into DD1 but this one has really gripped me. It's a game that expects a lot from the player but rewards good decisions and knowledge of mechanics. Overall, I'm enjoying it a lot! The wins are really satisfying. I've played about 23 hours and I just beat the 2nd boss. ![]()
